Calvert Cliffs State Park
Maryland, Calvert·Fossil hunting
Miocene shark teeth may be collected from the beach at Calvert Cliffs State Park, but the cliffs that produce them are closed — climbing them or walking beneath them is prohibited, and collecting from the cliff face is illegal.
- Collecting is limited to fossils already lying loose on the beach and in the surf zone, plus material in blocks that have fallen from the cliffs — no permit and no fee beyond parking.
- Collecting from the cliffs themselves is illegal, and climbing on or walking beneath them is prohibited outright because of active landslide risk.
