Metal detecting is allowed at Presque Isle with the park manager's sign-off, but Pennsylvania's statewide state-park rule leaves summer beach access to the manager's discretion, and the Gull Point Natural Area is closed to everyone from April through November.
- Pennsylvania's statewide DCNR rule requires checking in with the park manager and getting approval before detecting — there's no written application or fee, but it isn't a walk-up-and-go activity either, and approval can be withheld on a busy day or near an in-use facility
- On Presque Isle's beaches, detecting is only guaranteed from the Tuesday after Labor Day through the Saturday before Memorial Day; during the summer season it's entirely at the park manager's discretion
